Leonardo C. Profenna

Colonel Leonardo C. Profenna is Medical Director, Wound Care & Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at Floresville, Texas. He recently assumed that position after retiring as Chief of Hyperbaric Medicine at the San Antonio Military Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, and Preventive Medicine, and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Paramedical Studies from the University of Notre Dame in May 1987 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in May 1991. He entered the Air Force through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in February 1987. Col Profenna completed an Internal Medicine Residency at USAFSAM in 2003; and completed the USAF Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship in 2009.

Col Profenna’s Air Force career included Internal Medicine staff positions at Scott AFB and Aviano Air Base before he switched over to Flight Medicine at Aviano in 1999. He then completed the Residency in Aerospace Medicine and immediately was assigned to Ramstein Air Base as the Chief of Aerospace Medicine and Flight Medicine Flight Commander. Col Profenna’s next tour took him and his family back to Aviano, this time as the 31 Aerospace Medicine Squadron Commander. He has deployed to Iraq twice, once as the Commander, 332nd Expeditionary Aerospace Medicine Squadron at Balad Air Base, and also to Kuwait and to seven countries in Africa. Col Profenna is a Senior Flight Surgeon with over 550 flying hours and 149 combat hours in 16 different airframes.
