Primary Hyperbaric Medicine Course (On-site Education)
Due to the pandemic, PHMC is not currently being offered.
The Primary Hyperbaric Medicine Course (PHMC) is a traveling version of our Hyperbaric Medicine Team Training (HMTT) course. Click here to see a comparison of the two courses. PHMC is an approved 40-hour introductory course conducted by request at the client’s location. All seats in PHMC are reserved for the client.
PHMC is an interprofessional education activity and the first step toward credentialing or certification in this specialized field of medicine. The curriculum applies to the entire hyperbaric team.
PHMC is approved as an introductory course in hyperbaric medicine by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society and the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology. These organizations set up the industry-accepted educational guidelines to prepare physicians, nurses, and technologists for their roles in safe and effective patient care in hyperbaric medicine. This activity meets the UHMS and NBDHMT minimum requirements including 40 hours of face-to-face instruction.
The academics of this intensive course cover the spectrum of hyperbaric equipment and care. Topics include: physics of hyperbaric medicine and the gas laws; pharmacological effects of hyperbaric medicine; decompression theory and proper use of US Navy Dive tables; operational and fire safety; safety codes and standards; hyperbaric systems and ancillary equipment; ethics; side effects and contraindications; and patient selection and treatment of the UHMS accepted indications. The practicums include hyperbaric facility operation and proper use of transcutaneous oximetry equipment.
A final exam is used to summarize the information and strategies presented during the course.
International ATMO has conducted PHMC in numerous locations across the United States as well as Brazil, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Tobago.
